Christmas is not far off now and you’re probably rushing to get everything done before some much earned downtime. Don’t forget that January is traditionally a quiet time for most of our clients which makes it perfect for updates, upgrades and maintenance.  Please contact us ASAP if you want to book a technician in for this type of activity.

Apple have now released OS 10.5 Leopard which is very exiting for all Mac users and makes Microsoft’s Vista look archaic to say the least. More on that later.

In signing off for the year Crunch IT would like to wish all our valued clients and suppliers a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

OS X Leopard - In review

Firstly let me say that this latest operating system from Apple is quite awesome. Some of the features are just so good but also so simple you wonder why they weren’t included years ago, which of course means Microsoft will include them in it’s next operating system iteration in about 5 years time.

With over 300 new features we can’t mention them all but I’ll highlight just a few and if you want to view some of these follow this link and watch or download the tutorial to see them in action.

  Quick Look

Quick Look

How often do you search through multiple files waiting to load up each one only to find it’s not the one you’re after? A time wasting and annoying process. Quicklook solves this problem. Find the file hit the space bar and the file opens in Quicklook, you can skip through the pages of a document, play video, view files, the lot.

Data Detectors

This feature in Apple Mail picks up of key items of data in emails and allows you to easily utilise it. For example if a client emails you a meeting time and address you can rollover the address, click, and you’ll be taken to that address in Google Maps, almost instantly. Rollover the time, click, and the time and other details will create a meeting in iCal. Magic.

iChat

This new version of iChat is similar to the old version but with steroids injected. This version of iChat enables you to video conference with someone and whilst you’re doing this you can bring up files on screen and show others in the chat the files. So you can iChat to remote offices or clients and easily and clearly talk them through new creative work, changes etc. Oh and you can superimpose a background image onto your chat so if you want to appear to be at the beach you can or if you’re at the beach and want to appear at the office, same goes!

All this is not to say Leopard is flawless, there are still some bugs to be worked out and the new iCal excludes some key functions that were in the old version but all in all Leopard is poetry in motion.

Fastest Windows Vista Laptop is a Mac!

A recent article from PCWorld.com highlighted that the fastest Windows Vista Laptop they had tested was actually the Apple MacBook Pro. This really highlights the value for money and quality hardware architecture that Apple creates. For the full article follow this link.

Random Access Memory (RAM)
I know, how boring but more RAM can make a huge different to system performance and with the rising value of the Aussie Dollar RAM is now dirt cheap. If you’re interested in upgrading your RAM contact us now.

Google Maps – home is where the heart is!
After years of struggling with whereis.com.au from Sensis I recently discovered Google Maps. What a difference a URL makes. Google Maps has been online everytime I’ve used it, unlike Whereis. It’s much quicker, easier to use and has great features such as a point to point trip planner. Brilliant!

Adobe Licensing – Using CS on two Systems
The activation process supports installation on two machines. The Adobe product license agreement allows the primary user to install the product on a primary computer and also on a home or laptop computer for his or her use, provided that the two copies are not used simultaneously. While the activation process supports installing and activating Adobe software on two machines, the usage of the product on the second computer is restricted to the user who licensed the software. Allowing others to use a second copy of the software violates the product license agreement.

Some good Q&A regarding Adobe Software Activation is at this link.
